• Starting April 2025 for online tests (and September 2025 for all formats), the ACT no longer requires students to take the science section as part of the core exam.

Big Change for Families: 529 Plans Now Cover SAT & ACT Test Prep Courses

For years, 529 college savings plans were mainly used for tuition, room and board, and limited K–12 expenses. That changed recently. New federal legislation expanded what qualifies as a tax-free 529 expense, making these plans even more useful for families preparing students for college.

As of mid 2025, families can now use 529 funds to pay for SAT and ACT test preparation, opening the door to using college savings earlier in a student’s academic journey.

What’s New With 529 Plans

Federal law now allows 529 plan funds to be used for a broader range of education-related expenses. This expansion applies to distributions made on or after July 4, 2025.

Qualified expenses now include SAT and ACT test prep courses, standardized test fees such as the SAT, ACT, and AP exams, academic tutoring outside of traditional tuition, curriculum materials and instructional tools, dual enrollment fees for college courses taken in high school, and educational therapy for students with learning differences.

This means families can use 529 funds for formal test prep programs, private tutoring, and structured academic support without paying federal income tax on the withdrawal, as long as the expenses qualify.

What Counts as SAT and ACT Test Prep

Eligible test prep expenses generally include enrollment in in-person or online prep courses, private or group tutoring sessions focused on test performance, practice exams, and official study materials, and academic coaching specifically designed for standardized testing.

It is important that these services are clearly educational in nature. Families should keep detailed receipts and invoices that show what services were provided and when they occurred.

Annual Limits to Know About

There are still limits on how much can be used each year for K–12 related expenses.

For 2025, families may use up to $10,000 per student per year for qualified K–12 expenses, including tutoring and test prep. Beginning in 2026, this annual limit increases to $20,000 per student.

These limits apply per beneficiary, not per account.

State Tax Rules Matter

If you spend hours and weeks envisioning yourself at your "dream school"—but just as much time feeling anxious about the possibility of not getting in—then read on.

It’s only natural for students to fall in love with a college or university. There are as many reasons to be drawn to a given school as there are choices. Maybe you love the school spirit. Or perhaps you're craving the adventure of a “city school” where you can escape your hum-drum suburban existence. You might be drawn to a college for its big name and strong reputation—or see it as some exclusive club you’d love to join.

If this sounds like you, here’s my best advice:

1. Fall in love with more than one school.

Get excited—genuinely excited—about at least two other colleges on your list that are “target” or “likely” schools.
Wouldn’t that be like cheating, you might ask? Not at all. In fact, most students are a great fit at more than one school . The key is believing that. If you think carefully about what drew you to your dream school in the first place, you’ll start to see that other campuses offer a similar mix of qualities—whether it’s a certain campus vibe, academic program, size, or setting.

2. Keep an open mind.

Visit other schools with curiosity—or at least take a virtual tour and explore their websites with the conviction that your future holds many exciting possibilities. Great experiences and opportunities are not limited to just one ZIP code.

3. Be realistic and stay optimistic.

Your dream school has many suitors. It’s the place that hundreds or even thousands of other students want to call home. Stay hopeful about your chances—but cheer for your other favorites too , because they might just surprise you. Those schools would be lucky to have you, and your “Plan B” might turn out to be the perfect Plan A.

Federal Student Loan Interest Rates Drop for 2025-2026 – A Bit of Relief for College Borrowers

This week, the 10-year Treasury note auction set the interest rates for federal education loans that will be disbursed between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026 . The good news? Rates are slightly lower than the previous year, offering families and students a bit of breathing room when financing a college education.

Below are the new interest rates for federal student loans starting July 1, 2025:

Direct Undergraduate Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)

Current rate (2024–2025): 5.50%
New rate (2025–2026): 5.05%

While college costs are continually rising, many families search for ways to control costs while still ensuring a quality education for their child. Below, are ten ways in which families are able to reduce expenses, minimize a reduction to their retirement accounts and lower the dollar amount of loans needed to fill the gap.

As with other transitional times in life, communication amongst the family is key. Parents should communicate with their children in regards to financial expectations in the selection of a college or university and the children should be encouraged to express to their parents both their academic and social wishes for the next four years.

Please note that the list below contains some key ideas as to how to save money on the cost for college. It is not an all inclusive list and may not be right for every family. Planning strategically should start when the child is a high school sophomore or junior. But these tips below will give you some ideas for consideration as you begin to plan for this exciting time in your family’s life!

1. File both the FAFSA form and CSS Profile form early and correctly.
Even if you feel that you will not qualify for need-based aid, fill out the forms anyway to ensure that your child is considered for merit scholarship dollars. The FAFSA form has undergone recent updates, so check the official site each fall for release dates and application changes.

2. Search for colleges in which your child will be in the top 25% of their class or, in some other fashion, positively stands above and apart from the other applicants.

This will help with the acquisition of merit scholarships (even possibly from other schools through negotiations)!!

3. If considering public universities, do not only consider out-of-state public universities which typically come with a higher price tag.
Many in-state public universities provide the same academic and social opportunities with a more affordable price tag. Some regional agreements and tuition reciprocity programs in 2025 may also make nearby out-of-state schools more affordable—be sure to research options based on your location.

4. Consider the anticipated return on investment upon completion of your child’s college career.
Will a top dollar school guarantee a top dollar career? Or, with your child’s intended major, will a top dollar school not make financial sense? Research tools such as the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard can help assess value based on graduate outcomes.

5. Determine if your child is able to contribute to college costs via work/study programs.
These programs, while not only providing your child with work experience and a paycheck, tend to help students with time management and thus, typically lead to improved grades, improved resumes, and more career and graduate school opportunities.

6. Compare the cost of college books from various sources including the school bookstore, Amazon, and Chegg.
Consider options such as renting, purchasing used, or buying books that are available online or through Open Educational Resources (OERs). Surprisingly, the school bookstore may occasionally have the best pricing—especially through new inclusive access programs.

7. Determine if it is necessary to purchase the school’s medical insurance for your child.
You may save money if your child is able to remain on your existing insurance plan. Be sure to check waiver deadlines—missing them may result in automatic enrollment and a non-refundable charge.

8. If your child plans to go to graduate school, search for combination undergraduate/graduate degrees in his/her intended major
where you and your child can potentially save one year of college/graduate tuition along with room and board. Many schools now offer 4+1 or accelerated master’s programs that are worth exploring.

9. Consider, if appropriate, your child living at home and commuting to school for at least a portion of the four years.
This can dramatically reduce costs by eliminating room and board expenses. Some families also combine this with a year or two of community college before transferring to a four-year institution.

10. Develop a plan with your child early on.
For many children, they do not graduate in four years but rather five or six. All with additional tuition and housing expense... Discuss expectations with your child so that there is minimal possibility for extension of his or her undergraduate education. Regular meetings with academic advisors can help ensure an on-time graduation.

As always, communication is key. As a family, make sure to share goals, concerns and expectations. This will minimize potentially unanticipated surprises, reduce stress and keep everyone on the same page during this exciting time in your child’s life!

ACT or SAT: Which is Best for You?

Deciding whether your child should take the ACT or SAT can feel overwhelming. Both are widely accepted by colleges, but the exams differ in format, pacing, and style. The right choice often depends on the way your child learns, how comfortable they are with technology, and where their academic strengths lie. While practice tests remain the best way to determine which exam is the better fit, understanding the differences is a good place to start.

In general, the ACT is considered a more knowledge-based, straightforward exam. Its questions are direct, and the structure does not change based on student performance. This can appeal to students who prefer predictability and who thrive under consistent conditions. The SAT, on the other hand, leans into adaptivity and abstraction, rewarding students who are strong problem-solvers and can think critically in less predictable situations.

The format and scoring systems are the first major distinctions. The ACT can still be taken on paper or digitally. It is linear—every student answers the same set of questions—and it is scored on a 36-point scale. The composite ACT score is the average of English, Math, and Reading, while the optional Science section is reported separately. On the other hand, SAT is now fully digital and adaptive and no longer offered on paper. This means that each section is split into two modules, and the difficulty level of the second module depends on how the student performs in the first. The SAT is scored on a scale of 1600, with up to 800 points each in Reading & Writing and Math.

The English and reading sections also highlight some of the philosophical differences between the two exams. The ACT combines a traditional English test with a Reading test. The English portion consists of 50 questions based on passages where students must correct grammar, punctuation, or word choice, and identify rhetorical effectiveness. The Reading section includes four passages, each followed by a set of questions, most of which can be answered directly from the text. In contrast, the SAT integrates Reading and Writing into two large modules with 54 questions each. Each question is tied to a short passage, ranging from vocabulary-in-context questions to those requiring logical reasoning or interpretation of data from a graph or chart. Students are asked to demonstrate not just grammar knowledge, but also higher-level problem-solving and critical thinking.

When it comes to math, the two tests diverge even further. The ACT math section is a single, non-adaptive test with 45 multiple-choice questions, each offering four answer choices. The content ranges across algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus, with about 15–20% of the problems appearing as word problems. Calculators are permitted throughout, and success often depends on a solid foundation in procedural skills and the ability to work quickly. The SAT math portion, however, is broken into two adaptive modules of 22 questions each, for a total of 44. Roughly one-quarter of these require students to produce their own responses rather than choose from multiple-choice options. In the end, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Both the ACT and SAT assess similar core skills in reading, writing, and math, and colleges view them equally. The key is finding the test that best matches your child’s strengths and test-taking style. The most reliable way to do this is to have your child take a practice version of each test under timed conditions. By comparing the results—and noting which experience felt more natural—you can make a confident decision.

Colleges will accept either score, so what matters most is ensuring your child has the opportunity to showcase their abilities in the format that suits them best.

Old ACT vs Enhanced ACT

The new enhanced version of the ACT is here! While both versions measure similar academic skills, there are key differences in structure, scoring, and requirements. Below, we will explain these differences.

English Section
On the traditional ACT, the English section consists of 75 questions. The updated version reduces the number of questions to 60.

Math Section
The math section has also been adjusted. In the older format, students face 60 questions with five answer choices each. In the newer version, there are only 50 math questions, each with four possible answer choices.

Reading Section
Reading is another area where the two tests differ. The traditional ACT includes 40 questions based on four long passages. The updated format features 35 questions, still spread across four passages, but the passages themselves are shorter.

Science Section
Perhaps the biggest change is in the science section. On the traditional ACT, this section is required, with 40 questions that count toward your composite score. On the updated version, the science section is optional. It contains 36 questions and is reported separately from your composite score. Colleges will decide whether they require, recommend, or ignore this section for admissions.

Total Number of Questions
The older ACT includes 215 questions in total (excluding the essay). By contrast, the new ACT has fewer questions overall—135 if you only take the three core sections, and 171 if you include the optional science portion.

Composite Score
Scoring is also structured differently. In the traditional format, your composite score is the average of four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. On the updated test, the composite score is based only on the three core sections—English, Math, and Reading. If you take the science section, that score is reported separately.

Scoring Scale
Despite these changes, the scoring scale remains consistent across both versions. Each section and the composite score are reported on the familiar 1–36 scale.

Test Duration
Timing has been adjusted as well. The traditional ACT lasts 2 hours and 55 minutes, with an additional unscored 20-minute fifth section at the end. The updated version is shorter: 2 hours and 5 minutes if you only complete the three core sections, or 2 hours and 40 minutes if you also take the science portion. Instead of having a separate fifth section, unscored items are now embedded within the test itself.

Science Requirement
All students taking the traditional ACT are required to complete the science section. On the newer version, however, the science portion is optional, giving colleges the flexibility to set their own policies regarding whether applicants should complete it.

Test Format
The older ACT is available only in paper format and is entirely linear, meaning every student answers the same questions in the same order. The updated version can be taken on paper or digitally, but it is still linear—so unlike some other standardized tests, it does not use adaptive technology.

Field-Test Questions
In the traditional version, unscored field-test questions were grouped together in a separate fifth section. The new ACT eliminates this extra section by blending unscored questions directly into the main test.

Score Comparability
Finally, it’s important to note that a score earned on either version of the ACT carries the same weight and meaning. There is no scoring advantage or disadvantage, regardless of which test you take.

As a parent, it's normal to worry about the changes to college admissions tests that your child will face. The SAT transitioned to digital earlier this year, and now the ACT is set to receive an update in 2025. These shifts aim to make testing shorter and more flexible, which could help reduce some of the pressure on students during testing. The ACT and SAT both shared details about their updated tests, and we're here to break it down for you.

What Parents Need to Know About the ACT

The ACT is designed to give students more choices and a smoother experience. Here's a quick look at the key features:

Test Format: Students can take it on paper or digitally, depending on what works best for them.
Structure: It's straightforward – every student receives the same questions, ensuring fairness and predictability.
Sections: English, Math, Reading, with Science as an optional add-on.
Essay/Writing: Optional, and most colleges don't require it anyway.
Total Test Time: About 2 hours and 5 minutes for the core sections, or 2 hours and 40 minutes if Science is included – shorter than the old version.
Time Per Question (Average): English receives approximately 42 seconds, Math about 67 seconds, Reading 67 seconds, and Science 60 seconds, allowing kids a bit more time to think.

How the Formats Are Changing

Both tests are trying to make things easier on students by cutting down on length and complexity, making it more straightforward for students.

For the ACT, Science is now optional, just like the Essay. This changes the core sections to English, Math, and Reading, with fewer questions overall, shorter reading passages, and four choices for Math answers.
The SAT combines Reading and Writing, skips the essay, and uses an adaptive system that adjusts to the student's performance, which could play to their strengths or add extra challenge.

Timing Updates

ED II, or Early Decision II, is a great option for students who may have been disappointed by their first-choice colleges but who are ready to commit to another school if accepted. A quick guide to navigating the ED II process follows.

What is ED II?
Like ED I, ED II is a college decision plan whereby students enter into a contract in which they commit in advance to attend a school if admitted. Commitments are made by signing an Early Decision II agreement which obligates the student to attend the institution if selected.

Which schools offer ED II?
There are many colleges that offer ED II. Some include Colgate, Vassar, Emory, NYU, Bucknell, Vanderbilt, and many others.

How do I convert my Regular Decision application to ED II?
For colleges and universities offering the option of converting a Regular Decision application to ED II, the process is simple and generally entails notification to the admissions office and submission of an ED II Agreement by the ED II deadline.

What is the ED II Deadline?
ED II deadlines vary. Many if not most colleges have early to mid-January deadlines that align with their deadlines for Regular Decision.

Will applying ED II increase my chances of admission?
The answer to that question depends on the school. Many colleges do have higher admit rates for ED students, but students should treat each school individually and understand before applying ED II how their application will be reviewed.

When will I hear back from the school?
The ED II decision varies by school but most will give you a decision by mid-February.

Before heading into summer break, juniors should take an important step in the college application process: requesting letters of recommendation .

These letters are a crucial part of your application —often carrying considerable weight in admissions decisions. Typically, students are expected to submit one counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations , but it’s essential to check each college’s specific requirements on their admissions website.

Why Letters of Recommendation Matter

Private colleges usually require at least one counselor and one or two teacher recommendations .
Many colleges rank these letters as being of moderate to high importance in their decision-making.
A strong recommendation can influence admissions, scholarship decisions, and placement into honors programs .

Although these letters aren’t submitted until fall, asking for them before summer gives teachers the time and space to write a more thoughtful, detailed recommendation .

Tips for Securing Strong Recommendation Letters

Here’s how students can make sure their letters stand out:

1. Build Strong Relationships with Teachers and Counselors

Choose a teacher who knows you well, ideally someone from your junior year who teaches a core subject .
The teacher should be able to speak to your growth, strengths, classroom contributions, and character .
If you've taken online classes, choose a teacher from a class where you regularly participated, kept your camera on, and stayed engaged.
Most importantly, choose someone who has a positive opinion of you—you won’t see the letter, so trust and comfort matter.

2. Choose a Teacher from a Core Subject

Many colleges require that at least one recommender be from a core subject:
Math
English
Science
Social Science
World Language
If allowed, you can include additional letters from coaches, mentors, club advisors, or research supervisors—especially if they know you well in a meaningful context.

3. Ask for the Letter in Person (If Possible)

Always ask before listing a teacher on the Common App or Coalition App.
If in-person isn’t an option, send a respectful email requesting the recommendation.
Never assume— get confirmation before including a teacher’s name on your application.

4. Provide Helpful Information to Your Recommenders

Once a teacher agrees, make it easy for them to write a great letter by sharing:

Your full name and contact info
College deadlines
A list of schools you're applying to
Examples of your work , achievements, or contributions in their class

Tip : If asked, provide your resume. It helps paint a full picture—but don’t assume it’s required.

5. Respect Deadlines and Send Friendly Reminders

Keep track of application deadlines and ensure your teachers know them too.
Follow up politely a few weeks before the due date to confirm everything is on track.
Organization and courtesy go a long way.

6. Thank Your Recommenders

A thank-you note (written by hand is even better!) goes a long way.
A small gesture, like a baked treat or thoughtful card, is appreciated—but a gift card is not necessary or expected .

What’s in a name?

Juniors, if you’re about to set up your Common App account in preparation for applying to college this fall, be sure to provide Common App with a professional-sounding email address . The email address that you use for the Common App will be the main way in which colleges will communicate with you.

It’s important, therefore, to avoid juvenile-sounding or otherwise inappropriate email addresses. A perfectly good email name is firstnamelastname@gmail.com . I don’t recommend using your high school email address since school emails are at times inaccessible (for example, during the summer months or immediately upon graduation from high school).

7 Common App Essay Prompts

If you’re a junior starting to think about college applications, it’s time to begin focusing on one of the most important components: the Common Application essay. The prompts for the 2023–2024 cycle have been released, giving students a valuable opportunity to tell their unique stories and show admissions officers who they are beyond their GPA and test scores.

The Common App essay—also known as the personal statement—is a 650-word piece that should reflect how you think, what you value, and what experiences have shaped the person you are today. It’s your chance to provide insight that can’t be found elsewhere in your application.

Here Are the 2023–2024 Common App Essay Prompts:

1. Share your story.

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. Overcoming obstacles.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Questioning beliefs.

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

4. An unexpected gift.

Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

5. Personal growth.

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

6. Passion and curiosity.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

7. Choose your own adventure.

Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

Where Do I Begin?

It’s completely normal to feel unsure about where to start. Begin by reflecting on each of the prompts. Does one immediately speak to your experiences or interests? If so, start there—but keep an open mind. Many students write a few different drafts before discovering the story they truly want to tell.

You may even find common threads running through different versions—elements of your personality or past that define you. Often, these threads can be woven into a single, strong narrative that captures your voice.

Keep in mind: This essay isn’t something you’ll finish in one sitting. It takes time, revision, and feedback to get it right. That’s okay. That’s part of the process.

What a "Holistic" Review of College Applications Means for your Admissions Essay

If you have attended college information sessions, you may have heard admissions officers say that they conduct a "holistic" review of applications. What does that mean, and how does it affect their review of your Common App essay (a/k/a personal statement)?

When admissions officers state that they conduct "holistic" application reviews, they mean that they consider all parts of your application. These include grades, standardized test scores, recommendation letters, activities and honors, outside recommendation letters, and artistic or athletic portfolios and profiles where applicable. But just because a college reviews an application holistically does not mean that all factors will be weighted equally. For the most part, students’ grades and the level of rigor in their course schedule are the #1 and #2 factors in admissions. After that, colleges consider standardized test scores if they are submitted. Some schools, however, do not require applicants to submit test scores. Those schools may have a test optional or test flexible policy, and in that case, admissions will scrutinize other components of the application more carefully to account for the lack of test scores. That's why when working with students I spend a great deal of time helping them produce memorable and impactful essays. Stand-out essays are more important than ever and could very well tip the scales in your favor during the holistic review process.
