HwH Academy
HwH Academy is a personalized academic program for students in grades 5–8 who benefit from a smaller, more focused learning environment. Our program combines core academic instruction, executive functioning skill development, and enrichment opportunities to support the whole student.
Our microschool combines the structure of a traditional school with the flexibility of individualized instruction. With a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, students receive individualized academic instruction along with ongoing support in developing executive functioning skills throughout the school day.
Individualized small-group instruction combined with executive functioning support strengthens academic skills, builds student confidence, and helps students develop organization, planning, time management, and effective study strategies. HwH Academy helps students develop greater independence and become more effective learners both inside and outside the classroom. Our program offers a calm, structured environment where students are supported, challenged, and able to thrive academically.
What Is a Microschool?
A microschool is a small, student-centered learning environment that allows for personalized instruction, stronger teacher relationships, and greater academic flexibility than a traditional large classroom. This approach helps students feel supported, challenged, and engaged in learning.
At HwH Academy, the microschool model allows teachers to:
- Maintain a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
- Adapt learning to each student’s individual pace and needs.
- Create stronger teacher-student relationships.
- Support executive functioning skills throughout the day.
- Enable flexible instructional grouping based on academic level
- Create a calm, focused environment.
- Offer intervention, support, and enrichment opportunities, including STEM, art, and music.
More families are seeking alternatives to large classroom settings. Microschools offer a more personalized educational experience while still providing structure, consistency, and academic rigor. At HwH Academy, this model allows students to grow academically while building confidence and independence.
Why Families Choose HwH Academy
School Culture: Our program is designed for students who benefit from a learning environment where teachers can truly know them and respond to their academic needs. HwH Academy creates a school culture where every student is known, supported, and challenged.
Academic Instruction: HwH Academy is aligned with New York State Learning Standards and designed to support both academic growth and independent learning skills. Students receive instruction in:
- English Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- Art
- Music
- Physical Education
- Health
- STEM electives
Instructional Grouping: Students are grouped for instruction based on their academic level and learning needs rather than strictly by grade level. This approach allows teachers to provide instruction that is appropriately challenging and supportive for each student.
Executive Functioning Program: In addition to receiving support in all core subject areas, students develop executive functioning skills as part of their daily routine. Instruction includes organization, planning, time management, and study strategies that help students manage their work, build independence, and succeed both in and out of school.
Supporting Diverse Learners
HwH Academy recognizes that students learn in different ways. Through individualized support and small-group instruction, teachers are able to adapt instruction to meet a range of learning needs while maintaining strong academic expectations.
Instructional grouping allows us to organize small groups according to skill level. Teachers are then able to reinforce foundational skills, address learning gaps, and provide enrichment opportunities where appropriate. This flexible grouping model ensures that students can progress at a pace that best supports their academic growth.
Executive functioning skills are an important part of student success both in school and in life. At HwH Academy, these skills are intentionally taught and reinforced as part of the daily learning experience. Students receive structured support in organization, planning, time management, task initiation, prioritizing work, and developing effective study habits. Through small-group instruction and individualized guidance, teachers help students learn how to manage assignments, break down larger tasks, stay organized, and develop strategies that support independent learning.
Students who benefit from additional support, including those with learning differences, can receive targeted guidance to strengthen skills, build confidence, and develop effective learning strategies.
At the same time, students who are ready for greater academic challenge, including gifted learners, are provided opportunities for enrichment, deeper exploration of subject areas, and more advanced learning experiences.
